My 3rd guitar back in '93
Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars
Oh yeah, I progressed from the pink Westone to an Ibanez RG550DX in Purple Neon. It was a truly awesome shredding guitar and I loved it. The Edge Lo Pro trem enabled me to do all the whammy bar antics I’d been dreaming of listening to ‘Flying in a blue dream” and “Passion & Warfare” and the neck was incredibly comfortable. However the 90’s turned me into a drum & bass loving electronic freak and the purple shred guitar had to go and I replaced it with a Patrick Eggle Berlin Stage which I still own today, pics to come in the new year maybe. By the way, the photo to the left is not a photo of my actual guitar, it was just the best example I could find with Google.
Well that’s me done for this year, thanks to everyone who has visited, commented and supported Guitar Noize in 2007. It’s been a crazy 6 months where I have tried to post every weekday and have had 50,000 unique visitors according to Google Analytics viewing 100,000 pages although my server stats would contest that it is actually 70,000 unique visitors, who knows which is real but either way I’m very happy!
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, I hope you get that Gibson/Fender/Ibanez/Nick Huber/PRS… etc that you have on your xmas wish list!
P.S. If you are bored and like Aussie Wine why not check out my new website, WineSocial!

Caparison Angelus22
Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars
Well I never, I knew Caparison made some very cool looking metal guitars like this and this (oh and by the way if you have never heard any of Mattias “IA” Eklundh’s music check out his myspace page, I really don’t know how to describe it. Crazy.) but I had no idea they made an archtop like this!
Pictured left is the Angelus22 Purple Sunburst which has a flame maple arched top body. ”The body is designed to fit its neck joint for 22 frets to get sweet sounds from the neck pickup.”. Also the pickup selectors are interesting, the 3 way selector has a neck pickup, bridge pickup and rotary selector position. When in Rotary position you switch to using the 4 preset rotary knob which has the following configurations:
1. Neck Pickup Split Coil (inside)
2. Bridge Pickup Split Coil (inside)
3. Neck Pickup Split Coil (inside) + Bridge Pickup Split Coil (inside)
4. Neck Pickup Humbucking + Bridge Pickup Humbucking .
I imagine this makes the guitar pretty versatile, but I haven’t actually heard the instrument in action, I’m going to scour YouTube for some demos!

Dava silver pic, gold is so yesterday!
Posted by Jon in • Guitar Accessories
So yesterday I featured the Super blinged up Gold Pick, today I present to you the Dava Silver pick! What’s so good about this one? It goes up to 11, no hang on that joke doesn’t work, it has a nickel silver tip and a moulded rubber grip which apparently creates a flexible comfortable pick and apparently is very smooth and never too bright. Now these picks look pretty cool but if you are at all skeptical check out who is behind the product, Dave Storey, this is the guy that along with Gary Kahler invented the Kahler Trem back in the early 80’s! Check out this story about Kahler on Premier Guitar’s website.
Oh and by the way, they’re a lot cheaper than the Gold pick, a 6 pack will set you back about $7.50 for a set of precision tip picks, or $8.85 for a 3 pack of silver tips.

Mo' pick bling
Posted by Jon in • Guitar Accessories
Ok so these aren’t as exclusive as Starpics Gibeon Meteorite which will set you back AUD$5000, but considering guitar picks are the cheapest guitar accessory usually costing well under a dollar these are pretty high up on the guitar bling list. For 52 shiny english nuggets, thats $105 to the US Massive and $121 to the Downunder Crew you get a 9ct gold guitar pick polished to a mirror finish at 0.40mm thick and the engraving of your choice. Personally I would have liked to see some diamonds on there so you can match it with your grillz but then I’m not about to shell out $121 of my hard earned doller doller bills y’all! If you’ve got more money than sense, check out this link for details of how to waste your money.

Win a munked strat!
Posted by Jon in • Crazy Guitar Designs
Time for a bit of cross promotion! Fender.com is currently running a competition to win this Alvin and the Chipmunks Stratocaster, not everyone’s cup of tea I know, in fact I’m not exactly sure who would want this?! Anyway, I recently worked on a site for the film called munkyourself.com which in my opinion is a lot more fun than a strat painted with chipmunks so why not check it out and get munked!

My 2nd guitar back in '88!
Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars
Here it is, my 2nd guitar that I owned back in 1988. Yes it is pink, and no I don’t know what I was thinking but hey I was 12 years old in the height of 80’s rock, I mean nobody ever questioned Poison! Well, not at first anyway…
So here are the stats of this little rock machine. The neck was hard rock maple with a really nice easy access heel joint, the body is, and I quote from their 1988 catalogue, “solid wood”. Ahem… The pickups are Alnico, yes another vague description so I’m assuming they made them in house? You can check out the catalogue page here if you don’t believe me. Oh and remember this only cost about 200 english pounds so it was pretty good for the money. The locking trem was good, intonation was good and once I replaced the humbucker with a DiMarzio Vai model it sounded pretty cool too!
Coming up soon, my 3rd guitar I evolved in my taste from pink to purple… no really.

Snarling Dogs Spin Slides
Posted by Jon in • Guitar Accessories
A couple of days ago I wrote about the F-1 Ergonomic Pick and regular commenter Sammy pointed me in the direction of a company I have never heard of before called Snarling Dogs, apparently he uses the ‘Cat Tongues’ picks! Well I had to check these out for myself but I got sidetracked when I spotted the Spinslides! They say necessity is the mother of invention, well how many times have you been playing slide and then been unable to play the next passage because your finger is encased in glass or metal? In my case admittedly not very often, but if you have then you should check out the Snarling Dogs Spinslides as they are quite a clever creation. The slide allows you to simply spin it around so that you can continue playing with regular fretting without having to remove the slide and put it somewhere! It comes with different ring attachments to fit every finger and includes neoprene padding for added grip.
Alternatively you could do what Satch does and glue to your harmonica… right I’m off to invent a harmonica that attaches to your wrist.

Syncopation experiment
Posted by Jon
I found this interesting experiment on rhythmic syncopation over at Cognitive Daily and couldn’t resist posting it here at Guitar Noize. Now I know it is has no direct association with Guitars but it is a good example of how using Syncopation can bring new life to riffs. This is something that Paul Gilbert often preaches about too and in one of his instructional videos there is an example playing 16ths accenting different beats. I couldn’t find the exact example on YouTube So instead check out the video left for an excerpt from one of Paul Gilbert’s instructional videos showing how to use rhythmic variations on riffs.

When 7 strings just won't do
Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars
When I first saw this photo I thought it was a bass guitar, then I looked a little closer and realised that no, it is an 8 string electric from the very capable hands of Jeffrey Yong. I was drawn to his site by his acoustic guitar craftmanship which I featured a few days ago but then I spotted this little creation I thought it needed a mention. There is no specific details for this guitar but it looks like it uses some very nice exotic wood, in fact Jeffrey has a section on the woods he uses, at least for his acoustic instruments. Jeffrey also teaches and has his own guitar making course should you wish to become a luthier yourself.

Nik Huber Redwood
Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars
I love Nick Huber guitars they look like a PRS but more hand made, more attention to detail (if that is possible?!). There isn’t a lot of detail about this guitar on Nick’s website and he doesn’t seem to be responding to his email, I’m sure he’s a very busy man. Mind you Jol always makes time to answer my emails! Anyway, maybe he’ll be in touch when the xmas rush is over, I know I’ll be putting one of his guitars on my wish list!
