Little Budda

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Amps

Budda Superdrive II
The Budda Superdrive II might look like a cute little amp but this thing is built to pack a punch and just in case you are skeptical one of their endorsees is Joe Bonamassa! That didn’t impress you? How about Prashant Aswani then? That video is Prashant using the Superdrive 18 pictured left which is an 18 watt Class AB amp with 4 EL84’s and a 5u4 Rectifier Tube and 12AX7 High Grade Preamp Tubes that offer plenty of versatility from creamy blues tones, to full on crunch as you can hear from the video. All this tube power is driving through a custom designed Budda Phat 12 speaker. Doesn’t sound like an 18 watt amp does it? Now these amps aren’t exactly cheap but what did you expect? I’m sure in Australia we would have to pay around AUD$4000 for something of this calibre but you lucky people in the US of A can pick one of these little beauties up for the bargain price of $1436 at Guitar Center or Music123!

I’m off to sit cross legged somewhere quiet humming gently to see if Budda can send a bit of enlightenment my way!

Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MkII

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Amps

Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MkII
I had the fortune of checking out this amp the other day and had to feature it because 1) it’s an amazing amp and 2) the front lights up! Okay so the fact that the Hughes & Kettner logo seems to magically light up blue along with the amp model name and all this on a completely clear front so you can see the 4 EL34’s in the poweramp and the 9 12AX7’s in the preamp could be considered a bit over the top, others however may consider it to be the icing on the cake for this beast. Once those tubes start glowing it creates quite an amazing image along with the neon blue.

This definitive all-tube, Custom Class amp puts the most sought-after sounds in amp history at your fingertips. It’s all there, from vintage Californian clean to ‘60s British jangle and from classic rock tones to nu metal meltdown

Each of the amp sections features two channels, dedicated 3-band EQ and Master controls. Remote channel switching comes courtesy of the included Stageboard. The built-in effects loop is configurable in serial or parallel mode, and the optional MSM-1 MIDI module adds remote MIDI switching capabilities.

Make sure you check out the demo (click on the demo link on this page) for a close up view of the front and back of the 100 watt head along with plenty of audio demos played through a Strat and a Les Paul so you get a single coil and humbucker demo respectively.

NAMM 2008 - Marshall 1959RR Randy Rhoads Signature

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Amps

Marshall 1959RR
Marshall Amplifiers have announced the release of a strictly limited edition signature series amplifier based on the actual amplifier they created for the late great Randy Rhoads. The 1959RR is white and has extra gain compared to the original model which was requested by Randy.

There is a great video from NAMM 2008 filmed by Premier Guitar Magazine which shows the 1959RR and explains some of the background to the amp’s construction. If you would like to hear more of how the amp sounds, and it sounds amazing by the way, check out this youtube video, skip to 2:22 for some Marshall distortion madness!
