Jimi Hendrix "Valleys Of Neptune" Video

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Legends, Guitar News,

Once again thanks to Spinner I have some more Hendrix news for you on the forthcoming “Valleys Of Neptune” album due March 9. String Theory Design produced the video using a watercolour painting Jimi painted in 1957. A suitably psychadelic video in the spirit of Hendrix me thinks.

IHeartGuitar talks to Joe Satriani about Chickenfoot and the JS24

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Legends, Guitar News,

Peter over at IHeartGuitar has just posted this great interview with Joe Satriani where Joe talks about Chickenfoot (new video for Oh Yeah above) and gives a quick sneak insight into the new JS24 which is a 24 fret version of the signature Ibanez JS Series guitar which is currently in development, sounds like a small enhancement but I think this could sell a lot more JS’s!

If you haven’t seen it already Chickenfoot also have a YouTube channel.

NAMM 2009: Michael Lee Firkins at the Fender Kick-Off event

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Legends,

Michael Lee Firkins was one of my favourite 80’s shredders who although signed to Shrapnel records at the time his self-title released was so different to what everyone else was doing that I can’t understand how he seemed to avoid instant legendary status. Well Michael has switched the old Yamaha Pacifica for a Fender Strat but his style is still instantly recognisable. His whammy bar control is so amazing it actually sounds like slide guitar. Enjoy the video!

Michael Lee Firkins currently has a new album available called Black Light Sonatas.

Buddy Guy Live Set on Yahoo!

Posted by Jon in • Guitar Legends,

Blues Legend Buddy Guy recently released a new album called ‘Skin Deep’ and Yahoo! wisely took the opportunity to record a special performance for their Nissan Live Sets feature.

Armed with an ace drummer, a keyboardist, a second guitarist and a bassist, Buddy hit the stage to promote his latest album, the excellent Skin Deep, and took no prisoners. As he tore into “Little By Little,” he immediately headed into crowd and played to the ladies, getting right up in their faces and practically into their laps. He traded vocal licks with the crowd, traded solos with the piano player, played so soft he makes us hang on every note to get to the next one, and then blasted us with the kind of searing volume and distortion usually left to the likes of AC/DC and Motorhead. And this was just the first song! - from Yahoo!

Now I’m not familiar with the Nissan Live Sets site so I’m not sure how long this concert will be available and how long it will be on the front page for but currently you can watch 10 songs one after another, you just have to put up with a Nissan ad in between songs. I have embedded the player above from Yahoo! for ‘Best Damn Fool’ which is the opening track from Buddy’s new album ‘Skin Deep’.

Hendrix's torched Strat sells for £280,000

Posted by Jon in • Cool Guitars, Guitar Legends,

Hendrix Torched Strat
If you haven’t heard already the first guitar that Jimi Hendrix ever set fire to onstage went under the hammer and sold for a whopping £280,000. The guitar was torched at a gig in 1967 at London’s Astoria in Finsbury Park. The stunt sent roadies rushing to put out the flames and left Hendrix needing treatment for minor burns. Ever since that day the guitar apparently sat in the Hove garage of the parents of his former publicist. I thought Dweezil Zappa owned this guitar but that was the one that Jimi set fire to at the 1968 Miami rock festival which was given to Dweezil’s dad Frank. I’m not sure how much that eventually sold for but it was expected to fetch between $534,000 to $610,000 at the time in 2002 so I would have thought that this guitar would have been sold for a lot more than £280,000! I mean I saw a ‘65 Strat in a shop near me for around AUD$60,000 the other day which was probably owned by noone in particular. And apparently the new owner was just as surprised:

I thought I’d have to pay a little bit more for it, actually. I am going to play it, I hope some of it rubs off on me.

I bet you do, you lucky, no not lucky, wealthy b@$7@*#! Yes I am jealous so what!
