Ibanez Montage, yes another hybrid!
Posted by Jon in • Hybrid Guitars
Can I start by saying that this guitar has the most ridiculously long product code ever, the MSC750NT, phew thats a bit of a mouthful. Well this guitar is probably no suprise I mean how long did you think Ibanez would wait before getting a share of the hybrid market? So how many is that now? Well check out my Hybrid Guitar category. There’s the Ovation VXT, Taylor’s T5, the Michael Kelly Hybrid and the incredibly popular according to my stats Parkwood Hybrid! There is obviously a market for these guitars!
So what have Ibanez done differently? Well for a start the guitar has a few different modes from pure acoustic using the Piezo pickup to a clean electric using the magnetic pickup and a blend of both but it also has onboard DSP for distortion, chorus and reverb as well as phase canceling, dual notch filter and tuner. The tuner I have to say is a very useful addition, I have a built in tuner on my Takamine which I find invaluable.
So what does it sound like? Well why not check out Larry Mitchell demonstrating the various features. It certainly seems pretty versatile but I’m not sure it has the finesse of the Parkwood or the Taylor and I don’t think that these guitars are in any way a substitute for an electric but if you regularly have to switch between acoustic and electric mid set… well maybe you have a case for adding one of these to your arsenal.

Sounds interesting as acoustic and clean. For the overdrive part, well, I don’t know, something is missing. I love, however the fact that is has a built in tuner. This is something that indeed, you could use for an acoustic guitar.
The Parkwood I played did not sound very good acoustically at all. The T-5 was better, especially on the electric settings. I’m betting this guitar ends up being better than the Parkwood and gives the T-5 a run for it’s money at 1/3 the cost.
I have the Koa model on order. I can’t wait to get it. My jaw hit the floor when I saw this thing. Personally, I thought the overdrive sounded fantastic. I’m not really looking for an electric guitar, just something different in an acoustic, and this definitely appears to deliver something different!
I just picked up the translucent red model this weekend at a local music store and bought it on the spot. This is everything you would hope, expect, and more. With all of the incredible electronics that it has, it would be easy for reveiwers to overlook how this guitar feels and plays. It is extremely comfortable and the action among the best acoustic/electrics I have ever felt.
The onboard chorus/reverb sound beautiful. With separate volume controls for each of the channels (along with master gains and built-in EQ), the sheer number of tones that you can achieve is astounding. With the gain channel and a little tweaking, you can get a half decent solo sound for some light riffing as well.
At 1/3 the cost of Taylor T5 (which I also played in store), this was a no brainer.
