Lick Library Guitar Techniques - Stevie Ray Vaughan
This DVD instructed by Stuart Bull is a look into the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan and some of his trademark licks. The DVD is broken up into 5 main sections: Double Stops, Chords, Open Position Licks, String Bending and Blues Licks & Runs.

The first section Double Stops is really aimed at quite a beginner or intermediate level where Stuart shows some rudimentary techniques to build up your blues lick repertoire. These licks are all your Chuck Berry style rock ‘n’ roll licks and incorporate slides and 1/4 tone bends. If you are a SRV fan you will recognise all the licks covered in this section.

The 2nd section is simply named Chords, Stuart takes moveable chord patterns often used by Stevie such as the 6/9 chord and a 9th inversion used in tracks such as “Love Struck Baby”. Stuart demonstrates how these patterns can be moved around in order to create melodic phrases and fills.

Open Position Licks is an important section for emulating SRV’s style as he played a lot of open position licks. Just listen to Scuttle Buttlin’ to get an idea of the kind of licks Stuart covers. These licks also include turnarounds you can incorporate into your own blues lick vocabulary, these are the kind of licks that are going to get used a lot if you are playing a lot of blues.

The 4th section of the DVD is String Bending, you can’t play like Stevie if you can’t bend a note, so this is an important chapter looking at a few fundamentals. Again many of the licks are beginner to intermediate using simple pentatonic single and double string bend licks.

The final section Blues Licks & Runs is as the title suggests an assortment of licks that use a combination of the techniques covered in the rest of the DVD. These are longer and more advanced than the other sections so you have something to work toward.

This DVD is for the guitarist that is interested in learning or has begun learning blues many of the concepts discussed can be applied to any type of blues song and not just if you are playing SRV covers.
