You will have no doubt seen and heard about a few rack mounted amp modelling units this year, Fractal Audio Systems Axe FX has been around a while now with rave reviews and of course DigiDesign entered into this space with the ElevenRack earlier this year. The question I am asked frequently is how do you incorporate these into your rig? Well the easiest way is to run them directly into a powered speaker, so the clever people at DVK Technologies have created a speaker enclosure specifically designed for this purpose.
The GNR8-130, which will be launched at NAMM 2010, is a 130 Watt powered stereo guitar amplifier cabinet and has been designed to house your DSP and preamp units directly into the cabinet. By doing this you are recreating a traditional style amp that reacts and feels like a regular tube amp. The GNR8-130 deliver a full range frequency response system with headroom, dynamics, low distortion and the familiar feel and form of a guitar amp. Constrained layer cabinet design and construction ensures the closest possible neutral response. Whatever goes in, comes out a lot louder and unadulterated by amp and cabinet coloring. Tailored to be in line with the GNR8-130's preamp and amp, 2 x 12″ specially selected full range speakers from Lorantz Audio Services (C304P/PA) have been employed to ensure accurate reproduction of any modeller. The flat response of the cabinet, coupled with the true sonic reproduction of the amp and speakers perfectly complements the quality of today's top modelling devices.
The GNR8-130 also features active EQ controls ensuring a true boost and cut of 6db with virtually no interaction between the 3 bands, high quality Audio Grade capacitors guarantee transparency so as not to alter the tone of your guitar signal. The Cabinet offers 3RU rack-mount bays (4 x internal 19 rack-mount bays) in which to house your favourite devices and a rack bay storage facility for cables.
Judging by the amount of people I have read about who have sold all their amps and pedals and swapped to an Axe FX Ultra I imagine a product like this will do very well. I imagine some of the software modelling companies will be watching this space with a keen eye too as, at the moment, Fractal Audio Systems have the top end covered and DigiDesign are the only real competition and priced a lot lower because of reduced features.
