I first heard of Trev Wilkinson when I bought my Patrick Eggle Berlin guitar which came equipped with a Wilkinson Trem I didn’t realise that Trev Wilkinson had branched out into building guitars and basses until a few days ago when I came across Fret-King (weird url though?!).
A long and mutually respective association with none other than Leo Fender gave Trev all the answers and solutions to dispel many of the myths of this most iconic designer and allow him to get things right from the ‘inside out’.
Fret-King by Trev Wilkinson cleverly combines the art of expressive styling, an appreciation of subtle technical nuances, the science of ergonomics, and a clear understanding of the realities of ‘total product design’ to produce a peerless master class instrument, providing a rich and emotive tactile experience.
The Esprit 5 pictured left uses set-neck construction, a one piece mahogany neck. The body is also mahogany. The stepped front of the guitar give it a very unique strong appearance and the pickguard finishes the guitar with a nice retro feel. The pickups are Fret-King PAF’s which have been wound to sound like original PAF’s. A clever third control, the Fret-King Vari-coil™, gives a continuously variable blend of humbucker to single coil, giving a huge range of useable sounds.
