After a long break from playing electric guitar and only playing fingerstyle acoustic I decided to return to my former passion which sadly I lost interest in after my music degree and changing musical climate which saw guitar solos become extinct and rock/metal become quite stale. However after a couple of years of playing acoustic I suddenly had the urge to play electric again so I had my old Patrick Eggle guitar shipped over from England to Australia and started looking for a practice amp. After a couple of months of trying various amps I decided on a Vox Valvetronix AD50VT for the massive amount of tonal variety and built in DSP effects all for about AUD $500 it was great for recording and packed a punch at band rehearsals. The one thing that made the difference was that when you cranked the amp the single 12AX7 added a little of tube saturation and warmth that gave a more complex tone than you could get with the direct out which bypassed the tube entirely in the power amp.
So you are now probably wondering where on earth I am going with all this waffle, well Vox have just released the Vox Tonelab ST which by the looks of it is the Valvetronix amp in a pedal board, 12AX7 included! In fact the amp models in this unit surpass my old Vox amp by far as it contains 33 amp models from chimey Fender tones to the familiar AC15 & AC30 to high gain metal amps which have that dual rectifier sound that metalheads will love. Aside from the amp models the unit also contains 11 cabinet models which can be mix and matched with any of the 33 amp models. So you could use this unit as a cabinet simulator with your favourite tube amp when recording. The Tonelab ST also contains 25 effects such as Phaser, Flanger, Chorus and Delay.
There are fifty preset programs ready for immediate use including twenty song presets which provide recreations of instantly recognized rock guitar classics. Fifty user programs are ready for your own custom sounds. In addition to wah or volume, the expression pedal can be Quick-Assigned to nearly any effect parameter for realtime control and there is a built-in auto chromatic tuner with excellent visibility.
ToneLab ST is a complete ASIO-compatible USB audio interface. With a single USB connection, the ToneLab ST will conveniently interface with your computer DAW or sequencing software. ToneLab ST delivers the signal to your computer digitally, with no degradation in sound, for flawless recordings. Librarian software (Windows/Mac) for managing ToneLab ST programs will be available as a free download, and allows the easy exchange of data between users.
