Last week I reviewed the Way Huge Swollen Pickle Jumbo Fuzz and I was impressed, and I’m not a Fuzz kind of guy! This week I bring you the 2nd installment of my Way Huge demos with their distortion stomp box the Fat Sandwich. As you will hear in the video above this pedal has a lot of gain on tap and this is because this pedal has specifically been designed to be used with a clean amp setting. You can easily get everything from classic AC/DC style crunchy Marshall tones to a hot rodded Van Halen or Randy Rhoads Marshall sound with a flick of the distortion knob. As you will see at the end of the video I also got a perfect “Surfing with the Alien” style rhythm sound. I didn’t mess with the internal controls so everything you hear in the video are from using the pedal straight out of the box. I forced myself to focus the demo more this week because once I plugged in I played with this stomp box for a very long time and I would have ended up with hours of footage to edit down without a plan. This is definitely my kind of distortion pedal.
The controls on the pedal are Volume, Distortion, Presence and Resonance. The first two are self explanatory, the Presence lets you tweak the high frequency response and the Resonance manipulates the low frequencies. Internally there are 3 more controls, Curve for fine tuning the corner frequencies of the 1st distortion stage, Drive to adjust the gain in the 2nd stage of distortion and Highs which lets you tweak the amount of high end on the 2nd stage of distortion.
To say I love this pedal is an understatement, this pedal is fantastic and you can easily round off the harshness of the distortion for a nice Zep-like tone or just run it full bore and shred. It really suits 80′s rock when cranked, it has that JCM800 kind of sound to it at least to my ears. But don’t take my word for it, get down to a Way Huge dealer and play the Fat Sandwich through a nice clean amp I guarantee it will not disappoint.
Next week I will demo the Way Huge Pork Loin, and in a couple of days I will announce a competition to win these 3 amazing Way Huge pedals!
