The Centurycaster
Guitar Noize readers may remember that back in May I featured a guitar by Prairie Custom Guitars called ‘The OSBCaster‘ which was a Telecaster made from Oriented Strand Board. Well a Guitar Noize reader named Wes made me aware of a very special project that Marty has recently completed. This is the story in Marty’s own words:

Our neighbors are about to celebrate their 100 year anniversary of living in our community. The main person in this family is 75 years old. They live 3 miles away from my farm, which I bought from my mom and dad a few years ago. This guy played in the band which my mother and father played in for 25+ years. They traveled all over playing in little country halls and old school houses. On this guys fathers original homestead stands an old barn, which is now owned by his oldest son. His son has tried to talk him into letting him burn it down for many years with no success. He says it’s a landmark and should stay there until it falls down. He has asked my mother and I if we would come play some music on their anniversary( family reunion) that they are having on July 26th. All the old band members will be there, except my father that passed away a little over a year ago. Last Monday night I got an idea. Why not do a special build and give it to him the night of their reunion.
I contacted the son and asked if I could take some wood from the old barn and he said, take it all, hehe This old barn is in pretty bad shape. I had a terrible time finding enough decent wood to work with.

The great thing about this build is that Marty has documented the entire process on the Telecaster Discussion forum, from the first pieces of 2×8 that still have cow poo on them to the finished guitar. Make sure you page through the 6 pages of the thread to check out the progress! Marty had a plate engraved for the back of the bolt on neck which has a picture of the barn, the family name and “100 years” inscribed on it. Also on the back of the guitar the following inscription:

“The body of this guitar was built from wood from the barn a Tucker farm. The barn was built in 1924 This guitar was presented to Clifton and the Tucker family to commemorate 100 years in the Endiang Community July 26 2008.”

Not only is this an amazing story but an amazing guitar came out of the old barn, Marty is a truly gifted luthier who has proven that he can make beautiful guitars out of just about anything!
